Rowan Huntley is a far-travelled artist with an MA in Fine Art-Contemporary Dialogues from UWTSD Swansea. She has undertaken residencies in Antarctica and Greenland and has a background in representational painting reflecting the surface beauty of landscape. However, her recent work delves beneath that surface to explore Gower’s ice-age geology and strands of current climate science relating to sea level change. Collaborating with a geologist at British Antarctic Survey Rowan uses both man-made and natural materials significant to Gower in experimentation with extreme temperatures. This brings a different and fun perspective to important scientific work that is relevant to us all. Alongside painting she creates assembled sculptures out of rock, ceramic and metals, seen from her perspective as a Polar-exploring, geology-loving, coastal inhabitant of industrial south Wales. These are intended to spark conversation, which they usually do!
Rowan says “Changes to our climate are being strongly felt and the resulting disruption to life is intensifying annually. Joining forces to combine climate science with contemporary art helps to inspire thought, and understanding about both, in new ways.”
North Wind Studio is set in a pretty garden in the quiet village of Pennard. Visitors are warmly welcome and can enjoy a chat about working practice, inspirations and adventures, or browse original work undisturbed in an adjacent Gallery space. Rowan is a Visit Swansea Bay Partner and an Associate Member of the Alpine Club.
