CERAMICS

GILL PITTMAN .

I started out as a painter and studied for a year at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, but always had an interest in ceramics, spending some time at the Chelsea Pottery before taking up a career in medicine. On moving to South Wales, I went to ceramics classes at Swansea University and managed to combine some time for ceramics with practicing medicine. Since retiring I have been making wall plaques modelled in low relief in earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. These ‘ceramic paintings’ are representational with subjects inspired by the Gower landscape and the beautiful and mysterious creatures that share it with us.

After modelling the piece in clay, I make a plaster mould and slip cast a small number of replicas – usually only four or five. These are decorated in various ways by glazing or, in a novel technique, by combining fusing glass with porcelain. Each piece is a unique artwork.
I have my studio workshop here in Reynoldston, Gower, and would love to welcome you during Open Studios and show you how the work is made.
